The Department of Veterinary Public Health was created in 1995 as per the VCI MSVE 1993 Regulations under the leadership of Dr. P.D. Deshpande. During the initial years of its establishment, the department was associated with offering undergraduate courses and teaching the BVSc & AH degree program undergraduate students. In 2009, postgraduate studies were approved by the university with an intake of two MVSc students per academic year. As of now, 22 students have completed MVSc degrees from this department. The Department of VPH currently offers undergraduate courses as per the VCI MSVE 2016 Regulations, and MVSc and Ph. D courses, and research work as per the ICAR Restructured and revised syllabus of post-graduate programs 2021. The Department is involved in teaching, research, and extension activities.
For undergraduate studies three laboratories are functional namely Zoonosis-cum-epidemiology, Milk Hygiene, and Milk Hygiene labs.
Microbial quality assessment of food, and water (MPN, TVC, Yeast and Mold, bacterial isolation and enumeration); Antibiotic Sensitivity Test by disc diffusion method; Genomic detection of AMR genes by PCR (ESBL, mecA, tetA, sul, qnr, van, NDM, oxa, etc.); water analysis for bacteria, pH, turbidity, Hardness, Coliforms.
